പെട്രോളും ഡീസലും ആര്‍ക്കു വേണം?

ഒരൊറ്റ ചാര്‍ജ് മതി, 321.8 km ഓടി കൊള്ളും. ഇങ്ങനെ ബാറ്ററി കൊണ്ട് ഓടുന്ന ഒരു ഇലക്ട്രിക് കാറിന്റെ ഉടമ ആകണോ? പരമാവധി നാലു കൊല്ലം കാത്തിരിക്കൂ എന്നാണ് ജനറല്‍ മോട്ടോര്‍സ് പറയുന്നത്. ഇപ്പോള്‍ കമ്പനിക്കുള്ള ഇലക്ട്രിക് കാര്‍ Chevrolet Volt ആണ്. ഇത് ഒരു ചാര്‍ജില്‍ 35 miles മാത്രമേ സഞ്ചരിക്കൂ. എന്നാല്‍ മറ്റു ചില കമ്പനികള്‍ ഇതിനകം 300 miles കിട്ടുന്ന ഇലക്ട്രിക് കാറുകള്‍ ഇറക്കിയെങ്കിലും വലിയ ബാറ്ററിയും, വിലയും ഒരു പ്രശ്നമാണ്. (Tesla Motors’ Model S can go up to 300 miles, Nissan’s Leaf and Ford’s Focus electric cars both claim ranges of around 100 miles, but that can vary with temperature, terrain and speed.) ഇതിനോടൊക്കെ കിട പിടിക്കുന്ന വലിപ്പം കുറഞ്ഞ, കൂടുതല്‍ ശേഷിയുള്ള ബാറ്ററി നിര്‍മ്മിക്കാനുള്ള ശ്രമമാണ് പുരോഗമിക്കുന്നത്.

GM Ventures LLC യുടെ Envia യാണ് ബാറ്ററി നിര്‍മാണം. 7 million dollar ആണ് കഴിഞ്ഞ വര്ഷം ഈ സ്ഥാപനത്തിന് വേണ്ടി വകയിരുത്തിയത്. Envia said earlier this year that its next-generation rechargeable lithium-ion cell hit a record high for energy density. The company said the new battery could slash the price of electric vehicles by cutting the battery cost in half.

The company claims its breakthrough boosts lithium-ion battery density from a current level in the 110-140 watt-hours/kilogram range to well past 400 watt-hours/kilogram (Wh/kg). This would lower the cost of battery-powered transportation from about $350 to $500 per kilowatt-hour, currently; to as little as $125 to $150 per kilowatt-hour, as measured at the cell level rather than the pack level

nvia began work on the lithium-ion chemistry about four-and-a-half years ago, and unnamed automakers began testing the batteries in cars about mid-2010, according to the company. Saleable electric vehicles could be on the road within 24 months, or in time for the 2015 model year, when Envia says the cost per mile of a vehicle using its technology will reach parity with the cost per mile of a conventional gas-powered internal combustion engine.
